Project description
Biodegradable Polymer Impacts

The Biodegradable Polymer Impacts project aids the evaluation of marine ecotoxicity impacts associated with using a biodegradable shell for an oceanographic measurement buoy based on the UNEP/SETAC toxicity characterization model USEtox.

Biodegradable plastics

Background & project objective

Main goal of the proposed project is to provide science-based support for the development of seawater ecotoxicity characterization factors for biodegradable polymers in the context of developing a biodegradable shell for an oceanographic measurement buoy.

Project output

Main project output focuses on the aspects that are listed in below table.

AspectOutput description
Input data collection and curationCollect and curate physicochemical substance properties for around 10 chemical constituents (e.g. biodegradation half-lives).
Implementation of input data into characterization modelPrepare collected and curated data in a way that they can be implemented into the global toxicity characterization model USEtox.
Results calculation and interpretationSupport the calculation of marine ecotoxicity characterization factors based on the provided input data for the considered chemical constituents.
Documentation of applied methodsProvide a brief documentation of data collection, curation and USEtox implementation methods.
